More than 1,500 sheet music covers from the Tin Pan Alley era on Hawaii music, as well as some on the South Seas in general, make this book of 523 pages the ultimate work on this subject. The cover art of the Hawaii sheet music in the period of the so-called Territorial Years of the Hawaiian Islands from 1900 to 1959 shows great variety. Similar, sometimes even seemingly the same, yet each cover unique in its own right, they show the diversity of artistic approaches to illustrating stereotypical images of the Hawaiian Islands and the South Seas.
This book, authored by Hermann Mückler, is a contribution to the study of historical popular media. It allows comparison of the graphic styles and motifs of the covers of the early decades of the 20th century, when domestic music-making with upright pianos was still a central part of social life in the United States.

The King of Hawaii in Vienna 1881
A Visit of the Polynesian Monarch Kalakaua
One of the most sensational and unusual guests ever to visit the imperial and royal capital of Vienna was the Hawaiian King Kalakaua. Apart from the official program, it was above all the Prater with its ladies‘ band and Third Coffee House as well as the exuberant enthusiam of the viennese that put the exotic monarch in an almost euphoric mood. His appearance shocked the high aristocracy and prompted the tabloid press to report on him.
This amusing and culturally and historically important book, based on previously unpublished archive material, provides interesting insights into the Viennese mentality at the end of the 19th century and into Hawaiian cultural history. In addition, Kalakaua’s impact beyond contemporary press reports is outlined using a historical popular medium typical of the time, and the significance of his visit to Vienna for Austrian-Hawaiian relations is presented.
